At the same time, he pursues fugitive Jedi Padawan Devon Izara (Gideon Adlon) in hopes of making him his new apprentice.
Only two episodes of Maul – Shadow Lord they started broadcasting at this time. Anyway, show has already established itself as a solid, unique addition to the Star Wars Universe. It has been rated highly by critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and Disney and Lucasfilm are already working on a second season.
This series not only expands Maul’s story, but also brings a new face to the business that helps tell a relevant and compelling crime story. Mixing the social and political plot of Andor with animation, whimsy, and mysticism of The Clone Wars, Maul – Shadow Lord is a must-see Disney+ series for Star Wars fans, young and old.
Maul shines in the shadows Lord
From his beginning Star Wars: The Phantom MenaceMaul has become one of the most popular villains in the franchise. However, it was in animated shows like Star Wars: The Clone Wars again Star Wars: Rebels that his character acquired great depth and prominence. Rising from the depths of this failure to become a ruthless crime lord, Maul became a fearsome and powerful force in his own right. Voice actor Sam Witwer fills the character with great energy with his haunting, hypnotic performance.
Maul – Shadow Lord he captures the fear that his character invokes as it becomes the focus of his story. Although his group, the Shadow Collective, fell during the Empire’s rise, Maul continues to strike fear into the hearts of crime bosses like Nico Deemis (John Carroll Lynch) and Looti Vario (Chris Diamantopoulos). This series is DC’s version of Star Wars The Penguinwith shows featuring a criminal trying to gain power in a devastated, crime-ridden world, taking on a new initiative, and fighting multiple crime families.
Such a show also fills in the gaps in Maul’s story between his downfall in the Clone Wars and his return Star Wars: Rebels. We take a look at Maul’s criminal empire after the Clone Wars Solo: A Star Wars Storywhich revealed that he was the one who supported the group Crimson Dawn. However, after the film did not do well in theaters, the Star Wars franchise failed to expand on it until now Maul – Shadow Lord.
A grounded, thrilling police drama set in the Star Wars universe

Maul – Shadow Lord adds variety to the Star Wars franchise by introducing a procedural crime drama set in a galaxy far, far away. Although Maul is the title character, we also follow police detective Brander Lawson (The Secret Agent‘s Wagner Moura) as he investigates the crimes of the villain Janix. Additionally, Lawson has a sort of “buddy cop” dynamic with his droid partner, Two-Boots (portrayed by The IT crowdRichard Ayoade).
Lawson is neither a Force user nor an Imperial soldier. He is just a normal person trying to do good in a world that is slowly getting darker. Lawson struggles even more as he tries to connect with his son, Rylee (Charlie Bushnell), only because his police work has pulled him away. With a character like Lawson, the series breaks away from Skywalkers and Palpatines to tell a local story about ordinary people trying to survive and maintain order in a galaxy ruled by criminals and a corrupt government.
Maul – Shadow Lord it draws a lot of similarities to the cyberpunk film Blade Runner as it follows Lawson through his robotic police station and the vibrant, neon streets of Janix. The show also injects a lot of excitement into its stories as the characters engage in high-speed police chases involving blasters and hovercrafts.
Star Wars is still a timeless story

Since its inception in 1977, Star Wars has presented deep political and social commentary through its stories of the Jedi, the Sith, the Rebellion, and the Galactic Empire. Maul – Shadow Lord continues the tradition of this franchise by exploring contemporary issues and concerns with its characters.
For example, in the series, we see Lawson hesitant to get the Empire involved in his local investigation into Maul’s crimes, fearing that they will put Janix in lockdown. Whether this was intentional or not, the documentary reflects the growing concern and conflict between state and federal law enforcement in the United States following the Trump Administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration.
Shadow Lord and examines crime and its association with poverty. Dubbed an outlaw along with the rest of the Jedi, Devon resorts to stealing for a living on the streets as he and his master, Eeko-Dio-Daki (Dennis Haysbert), hide out in the kingdom. Maul uses Devon’s despair and anger at the Empire to persuade him to join him in seeking revenge against his former Sith master, Emperor Palpatine.
In Star Wars, we’ve seen great characters like Anakin Skywalker turn to the dark side after succumbing to fear, anger, hatred, and greed. Through Devon and his relationship with Maul, we see how a good person can be tempted into a life of crime when left on the streets with little food or money. The fact that Devon was falsely accused of being a criminal by the State highlights how crime and poverty can be created or worsened by the very government it was meant to prevent.
While Rebels fans are familiar with Maul’s ultimate fate in the franchise, Shadow Lord it’s an important, exciting chapter in the story of a villain who wants to be seen. As we follow the dark lord in the shadow of Janix, we continue to see the world of Star Wars expand as the franchise explores new creative territories.
