3 underground movies you can watch for free this weekend (April 17-19)

This week, I’m going to look for some great uncensored movies so you don’t need them. What I found is a strong trio that combines three different emotions. One will make you sweat during dinner, one will make you confused about your neighbors, and one will make you want to adopt a ginger cat immediately. The best part? All are free to watch movies on Tubi. So here are my picks for this weekend.

The Invitation (2015)
Simemo’s official synopsis sounds like a very familiar movie – a man goes to a dinner party at his ex-wife’s house and something goes wrong. That’s all! That’s the whole setup. And yet director Karyn Kusama turns that premise into a chilling and disturbing film.
Your intelligence is that you are not sure if the fear you feel is real or just sadness wearing a bad mask. Logan Marshall-Green carries the entire film on a knife’s edge, and the slow build is precisely timed so that by the time the third act arrives, your palms will be sweating. This underrated movie somehow flew under most people’s radar. You can watch it on your own and maybe turn down any dinner invitations for a week.

Below (2015)

This is a British thriller that deserves more attention than it’s ever received. It begins slowly with a young couple expecting their first child. They make friends with the new couple downstairs, who are also expecting them. Then something happens, and the film starts to veer into horror.
What makes The Ones Below so successful is how familiar everything looks. Sophisticated, quiet, suburban. The scares come in with subtle touches and loaded silences rather than jump scares or overt manipulation. If you enjoy movies that make you question people’s motives the first time, this is for you.

A Street Cat Named Bob (2016)

After two exciting games, here’s something that will restore your faith in humans a little. A Street Cat Named Bob is based on the true story of James Bowen, a homeless bus rider and recovering drug addict living on the streets of London, whose life was changed when he found an injured ginger kitten and nursed it back to health. The cat, Bob, refused to leave. Thus began one of the most unexpected and truly touching friendships you will ever see in a movie.
It would be easy to dismiss it as an expression of sympathy, and it does not suppress emotion. But it gets every minute of it. Luke Treadaway is excellent as James, and the real Bob the Cat plays himself, one of the best performances of the decade. It’s the kind of movie that doesn’t ask much of you without paying attention, and it rewards you quietly and completely.
