Anthropic reportedly acquires AI startup Coefficient Bio for $400M+

Anthropic PBC has reportedly acquired Coefficient Bio Inc., a provider of artificial intelligence software for medical researchers.

Part of the original stock belonged to a healthcare-focused venture capital firm called Dimension. The fund informed investors of the purchase in a letter that said published today is reporter Eric Newcomer. According to the filing, Anthropic is paying more than $400 million in stock for the company.

The Coefficient was founded about 8 months ago by a group of former pharmaceutical executives and researchers. According to Newcomer, the company has developed AI models optimized for biological research. In a January post at X, one of the company’s founders said the company’s technology “will change everything about how the industry learns and makes decisions”. That suggests that Coefficient models are designed to automate high-impact research tasks.

One of the most important medical research applications where startups are using AI is small molecule discovery. Small molecules are the building blocks of life about 1 nanometer in size that form the basis of many drugs. Manas AI Inc., a startup working in that area, measurements AI can speed up certain aspects of job performance discovery by a factor of 100.

One way researchers determine whether a small molecule has therapeutic applications is to test its ability to bind bacteria. If the small molecule can’t stick to the pathogen, it can’t kill it. The testing process is time-consuming because biological molecules are constantly changing their structure, which means their stopping points are also changing. AI can speed up the process.

Startups are also using the technology in many other clinical research activities. Bioptimus Inc., for example, has released transformer model that facilitates the study of biomarkers. Those are molecules that can be used to diagnose diseases and measure the effectiveness of treatments. Major players of the technology industry have also joined the fray with their AI models Hurry up activities such as mapping protein structures.

Anthropic’s decision to acquire a healthcare-focused AI startup isn’t entirely surprising. Last year, the company was introduced a number of features that improved Claude’s ability to automate clinical research tasks. In January, of course added integration with several third-party clinical databases and research tools.

Anthropic may follow up its recent healthcare-focused reviews with features aimed at researchers in other fields. Last month, the company presented blog dedicated to Claude’s applied science. OpenAI Group PBC recently revealed planning to introduce a “fully automated researcher” may give Anthropic another reason to build new scientific features.

Coefficient is the third company purchased by Anthropic in the last 6 months. It previously earned task automation startup Vercept Inc. and developer of Bun, a popular open source tool for building JavaScript applications.
