After five years, Apple updated AirPods Max with a new H2 chip, improved noise cancellation, and a wider set of features that bring them closer to their entire audio system. On paper, this is a logical improvement. Actually, it is very selective.
What Apple has changed this time
The biggest change is from two H1 chips to two H2 chips, the same silicon used in the new AirPods Pro. That upgrade enables a range of features not previously available in the Max.
Active noise cancellation is now said to be up to 1.5 times more effective, while transparent mode has been tuned to sound more natural. Adaptive Audio combines both modes depending on your surroundings, and Conversation Awareness slows down playback when you start talking.
Apple has also added personal volume, which adapts to your listening habits over time, as well as volume reduction to control sudden increases in external noise. Live translation is now supported as well, allowing real-time conversations in all languages through headphones.
Sound improvements are part of that improvement
Alongside these changes, Apple introduced a custom variable frequency amplifier designed to improve bass response, vocal clarity, and instrument separation, while reducing distortion at high volumes.
The original AirPods Max already offered a warm, balanced sound signature, so this update seems to focus on improvement rather than overhaul. The combination of advanced processing and strong noise cancellation is where the biggest benefits seem to come from.
Lossless audio is available, but limited
Lossless audio support has finally been added, with 24-bit, 48kHz playback now available via a wired USB-C connection.
With Bluetooth, audio is always limited to AAC, there is no support for high-bandwidth wireless codecs. This means that lossless listening still requires a cable, which stands out with the best headphones in 2026.
Additional features and how they translate are used
Apple also extends functionality beyond audio playback. The digital crown can now act as a remote shutter for the iPhone camera, while voice isolation is positioned as a way to improve call clarity and enable flexible recording conditions.
Head gesture controls have been added to interact with Siri, allowing users to respond by nodding or shaking their heads. These features align AirPods Max with the capabilities already found in AirPods Pro, although their performance varies depending on the context, especially with the large over-ear design.
What hasn’t changed still stands out
Despite the interior upgrades, the body design remains largely the same. AirPods Max 2 keeps the metal construction, non-folding design, and the Smart Case, which continues to provide minimal protection and works primarily to put the headphones in a low-power state.
There is still no dedicated power button, which means the case is always needed to manage battery usage. Battery life remains unchanged at around 20 hours, which is relatively modest compared to competitors that offer around 30 hours or more.
The headphones are quite heavy at around 386 grams, they don’t fold up for easy storage, and they still lack any official rating for water or dust resistance.
What this upgrade really brings
AirPods Max 2 is a clear improvement in the areas of processing and software. The H2 chip enables a dynamic listening experience, while improvements in noise cancellation and audio processing should translate into better overall performance.
At the same time, design, usability limitations, and longstanding hardware concerns remain unchanged.
Is it enough to justify a review?
That depends on your expectations. If better sound refinement, stronger noise cancellation, and deeper integration with Apple’s ecosystem were your priorities, this update delivers.
If your expectation was a comprehensive redesign that addresses comfort, portability, and everyday usability, AirPods Max 2 will feel more familiar than new.
